Press release – Pacelli School of the Blind Christmas Party

Christmas is known as a season of gifts, giving and enriching lives. People feel a greater urge to give back to the community during this period and beneficiaries belong to different categories. The Pacelli School For the Blind was a beneficiary this season has she held her annual Christmas party on Wednesday 14 December 2011 in the school premises situated at 30, Ajao Road Surulere Lagos.

Chairman at the occasion was Dr Newton Jibunoh who has supported the school for over 30 years. The Proprietor of the school and Chief Shepherd of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie was ably represented by Msgr. Bernand Okodua, the Archdiocesan Vica and the Dean of Mainland Deanery. The Managing Director of Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo), a principal benefactor of the school, Sir Chike Onyekwe; was represented at the event by the Head of Social Performance, Mr Dejo Oluwaniyi. The Commissioner of Education Lagos state, Mrs Oladunjoye Olayinka was also present to felicitate with the students.

In the Chairman’s opening remarks, he admonished parents and the general public to change their attitude towards the physically challenged and disabled children who have been known to become accountants, lawyers and businessmen. He prayed everyone to continue encouraging and show love to the children. In her welcome address, the principal of the school, Sister Benedicta, was grateful for the physical presence of the invited guests and asked for continuous support in 2012. The gifted children entertained their teachers, guests and parents with choreography, Christmas carols, Drama and cultural dance. The Drama was particularly entertaining, laced with Christmas carols.

The event also saw the launch of the 2012 calendar which was used to raise funds for the maintenance of the school. The Chairman, Dr Jibunoh, kicked off the launch followed by the Commission of Education who purchased enough to go round all the offices of the Ministry of Education in Lagos State. Other invited guests made donations towards the launch. In the speech presented by Mr Dejo Oluwaniyi, on behalf of the Managing Director of SNEPCo, he stated that Shell has donated over 15million naira in cash and kind towards the Pacelli School of the Blind and always seeking for ways to partner with like-minded institutions. A cash donation of 2Million naira was made by the organization in addition to food items, provisions and toiletries. Staff of Fidelity Bank, Surulere also provided items and made a cash donation from their personal contributions. Other guests were also able to purchase the calendar at a token amount.

Students at Pacelli School For the Blind will not forget this year’s Christmas Carol/Drama in a hurry as they had fun and the school was able to raise some much-needed funds.  Fellow citizenry are encouraged to give to this worthy cause and other like-minded institutions.
